I'm an avid cyclist who's tried nearly everything in the world of biking—road, gravel, and MTB. I’ve also tested most of the major electronic shifting systems out there, and I can confidently say the Wheeltop GeX system gets you about 90% of the performance of the big-name brands—for half the price.

Let’s start with packaging and presentation. It’s pristine. The unboxing experience is impressive—on par with, if not better than, the premium brands.

Build Quality

The shifter hoods, derailleur, and brakes all feel solid—no cheap plastics here. Everything has a premium touch, and nothing feels like a budget compromise.

That said, there is one design flaw worth noting: the shifter hoods are stiff and not great for pulling back. During a minor brake bleed, accessing the bleed port on the shifters was frustrating because of how hard the rubber hoods were to manipulate. Wheeltop—please consider using a more supple, flexible rubber in future revisions.

Installation

Let’s begin with the brakes. They come pre-filled with mineral oil, so unless you lose a lot of fluid when cutting and routing the hoses, there’s really nothing you need to do. Installation was seamless.

The derailleur installs just as easily—just bolt it onto the hanger, and you're good to go.

Setup Experience

This is where I ran into the most issues. Wheeltop, please invest in a proper English translation for your app. Right now, it's rough. To really understand how to set it up, I recommend watching some YouTube tutorials.

Once you're in the app, the initial calibration is absolutely crucial. If you don’t get the smallest ring dialed in correctly, the rest of the shifting will suffer. This is probably the weakest point of the system—not because of hardware, but because of unclear instructions and poor UI in the app.

That said, once the initial calibration is done properly, the rest of the setup is fairly straightforward. Shifting performance is very good—I'd say about 90–95% as crisp as the big brands. I suspect the slight gap is due to the system needing to work with a wide range of third-party cassettes, which likely introduces some compromise.

Braking

The brakes are excellent. They feel nearly identical to the ones from the major Japanese component manufacturer. There's not a huge amount of modulation, but for road and gravel riding, I actually prefer the more on/off-style braking they provide.

Battery Life

Battery life has been great so far. I’ve done several rides with frequent shifting, and the battery is still around 80%. No complaints there.

Final Thoughts

I’ve only had the system for about a month, so I can’t speak to long-term durability or warranty support. But based on what I’ve seen so far, Wheeltop has delivered a solid product. The hardware feels premium, shifting is crisp, braking is excellent, and the value is undeniable.

I’m giving it 4 out of 5 stars—mainly because of the stiff shifter hoods and the confusing, poorly translated app. A few small improvements, and this could easily be a top-tier system.

I've yet to do the build with this groupset, but this will be my second. I already have the EDS TX group on my road bike and it's wonderful. I and mobility challenges and the electronic shifting is needed. I will be converting ALL of my bikes to this because of its backwards compatability!

Very Impressive

Easy installation and set up. Only have 2 complaints. First the hoods are on the smaller side and have a long reach at the minimum setting. Second is the poor English translation of the user manual. But otherwise, definitely a challenger to the Shimano and SRAM monopoly on electronic groupsets

Recently purchased the EDS GeX for a road bike build I wanted to setup as a 1X12. The brakes were very easy to setup and after fitting and cutting the lines still did not have to bleed the brakes. The Derailleur did take some fiddling to get it dialed in but after that shifting is great. If you are someone who likes to tinker and set your own bikes up I would recommend this product.
